From Writing to Designing

Over the past several weeks, the Marketing Team has been working diligently using various platforms to promote the “Mission,Method,Memory: The Lab School at EIU” exhibit. We are posting daily about team updates and exhibit developments on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. We have received amazing feedback from our followers. Social media has been an indispensable tool to promote the Lab School exhibit.

However, social media is not the only avenue the Marketing Team is taking to talk about the “Mission, Method, Memory: The Lab School at EIU” exhibit. Rachael Sapp and I have been collaborating in creating two posters that advertise the exhibit, each with its own specific purpose. I do not have a design background, but making these posters with Rachael has opened my eyes to what I can do with certain computer software, such as InDesign. I am excited to show the public what the final products are. Before I talk about what we have produced I want to show you our inspiration. The team looked at various museum exhibit posters to get our creative minds activated! We came across this poster on Pinterest and our inspiration took hold.

We loved the overall look of this poster and decided to take elements from it and make them our own in the design of the permanent exhibit poster. We also incorporated the colors of our exhibit into both posters. The permanent exhibit poster is 11”X17” and will be placed around Eastern Illinois University’s campus, the cities of Charleston and Mattoon. Some of these places include: What’s Cookin, County Market, Starbucks, the Charleston Public Library, Persimmon Lane, and much more. Once the team places them in their designated areas these advertisements will not come down. This poster will inform the publicUpdated 11X17 Poster Screen that the exhibit is permanent, and if they need information about the location or times the exhibit is open to contact the College of Education and Professional Studies. This permanent exhibit poster is significant because it reaches out to other audiences that are not familiar with our social media. These posters will give Eastern students and local residents of Charleston and Mattoon a teaser of what they can expect to see in the Lab School exhibit.

The second poster Rachael and I created is designated for promoting the opening night of the “Mission, Method, Memory: The Lab School at EIU” exhibit. The inspiration for this poster came from somewhere close to home. We loved what the Design Team created for the section panels. We decided to take the outline of a specific section panel and incorporate it into this particular poster.

Viewers will see the date, time, and location of the exhibit opening night. In addition, the poster displays a tagline that gives the audience an idea of what this exhibit is about. After the opening night we will take these posters down, but the permanent poster will stay up to inform future students and the general public about this exhibit.

Be on the lookout for these posters around EIU, Charleston, and Mattoon in the next couple of weeks. We hope to see you on opening night!
